Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Employers
What is the ROC Youth Employment Network?
The ROC Youth Employment Network is a collaboration between the City of Rochester and Monroe County, with RochesterWorks acting as program administrator on behalf of the County. The intent of the ROC Youth Employment Network is to provide meaningful work opportunities to youth ages 14-20 within the City of Rochester and throughout Monroe County. The ROC Youth Employment Network programs include ROC Your Job (RYJ), Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP), and Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
How are youth selected for the ROC Youth Employment Network internship positions?
Several thousand youths apply to these programs each year. For some youth that apply, this is their first opportunity to gain real-world work experience. Before youth are placed, they will have applied to the program, attended pre-screen interviews to determine their readiness, and submitted supporting documentation to confirm eligibility. Accepted applicants are then placed in positions in the public, not-for-profit, or private sector for the duration of six-weeks for the summer programs or the duration of the school year for the after school program.
When do the ROC Youth Employment Network programs run?
The ROC Your Job Program usually operates September through June with hours worked by interns being determined by their age, after school availability, and NYS Labor laws. For the Summer of Opportunity and Summer Youth Employment Programs, youth typically begin their work assignments in late June or early July, and complete 6 weeks of work.
Do I have to pay for my intern?
No. The cost of employee wages are funded by the ROC Youth Employment Network. The worksites are solely responsible for providing their interns with a meaningful work experience through coaching and mentoring. ROC Youth Employment Network staff will provide follow-up monitoring to ensure that both the intern and worksite partners have a beneficial and enjoyable experience.
